About Project

Mathildenhöhe VR is an immersive design sandbox set within a faithful virtual reconstruction of Darmstadt’s historic Mathildenhöhe artist colony. Created with Unreal Engine 5.3, the project leverages Google Maps data and on-site photogrammetry to recreate the iconic location with high fidelity. The experience targets a wide audience—ranging from teenagers to architecture enthusiasts aged up to 70—and invites users to explore the cultural landscape while contributing to it creatively.

At the core of the experience is a modular building system, allowing users to construct their own art nouveau-style houses from elements like walls, windows, stairs, and roofs. Resources for building are gathered from a natural, mystical environment, bridging nature and architecture—key themes of the art nouveau movement. This hands-on creative engagement promotes learning through exploration, visual experimentation, and environmental interaction.

As players progress and build more houses, existing Mathildenhöhe buildings emerge within the virtual space. Eventually, the experience unlocks a virtual exhibition, featuring 3D scans of real artworks from the Mathildenhöhe museum, blending digital recreation with tangible cultural heritage.

Designed to encourage self-expression and community, Mathildenhöhe VR celebrates the intersection of art, architecture, and immersive technology. The project's broader vision is to inspire appreciation for cultural landmarks while empowering users to leave their own creative imprint. Whether an aspiring designer or casual visitor, every user contributes to the reimagining of one of Germany’s most significant artist colonies.
