About Project

Echoes of Time is a speculative VR project that reimagines prehistoric storytelling through the integration of music, cave art, and immersive interaction. Set in an ancient cave inspired by the Chauvet Cave in France, the experience invites users to step into the role of a Cro-Magnon performer. Using a virtual bone flute modeled after the oldest known human instrument, players control sound through both hand gestures and breath, mimicking real-world flute-playing techniques. The VR environment detects microphone input and responds in real time, allowing for an expressive, bodily form of interaction.

Users select from two melodic pathways—red or green—each affecting how characters in the cave respond. A ghost-like rhino and human figure, both designed in a tubular, painterly style inspired by ancient drawings, emerge and animate in reaction to the chosen music. The combination of acoustic spatial effects and dynamic creature behavior builds a deeply atmospheric narrative experience grounded in archaeological speculation.

All musical elements were composed using AI-generated audio models, trained on historical bone flute recordings and expanded with atmospheric textures. The sound design reflects not just historical accuracy but also artistic interpretation, providing a sonic bridge between ancient and imagined cultures.

The technical foundation includes Unity, custom-built 3D assets, and integration of microphone input for interaction. Beyond its artistic ambition, the project offers an educational lens into early human creativity—blending speculative history with modern digital storytelling. Echoes of Time showcases how virtual reality can serve as a tool for archaeological imagination, fostering both emotional and cognitive engagement with prehistoric themes.
