„Die Schule brennt und wir wissen warum“ is our graduation film at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. In it, I remember my own school days and tell the story of a character whose needs and problems were close to my own at the time. Just like Rita, I witnessed bullying during my time at school and was complicit in it by not intervening. The fear of becoming a victim myself is too great.

The role of outsiders in bullying problems is rarely addressed in films. That’s exactly why I wanted to give Rita’s emotional world a place in the film. She documents the stories of the bullied, the exploited and the oppressed in the scribbled-on cubicles of the school toilet. These are stories that burn through school life like fire holes and affect everyone who looks away.“

The film celebrated its premiere at the Landshut Short Film Festival and was nominated for the D-A-CH competition. It was shown nationally and internationally, for example at Filmfest Dresden, Sehsüchte International Student Filmfestival, Lichter Filmfest Frankfurt, Filmz Mainz, Alpinale in Austria, LesGaiCineMad in Madrid and CINEMAGIC in Ireland. It won the „Deutscher Jugendfilmpreis“ at the Bundes.Festival. Film and the „Best Student Film“ at the Blue Sea Film Festival in Finland.
